Quantitative microclimate steering blueprints combining Vapor Pressure Deficit (VPD), Daily Light Integral (DLI), Radiation-to-Temperature Ratio (RTR), and root-zone stone wool/coir dry-back kinetics.
24-hour RTR temperature integration, DIF generative truss balance, VPD 0.8β1.2 kPa stomatal windows, and stone wool EC 3.0β4.5 dS/m steering.
Crown chilling hours, night temperature Brix sugar accumulation, root-zone EC < 1.6 dS/m osmotic limits, and Botrytis dew-point prevention.
High-transpiration leaf area index (LAI 3.5+), VPD 0.6β0.9 kPa vegetative velocity, DLI 25β35 mol/mΒ²/d assimilation, and rapid drip pulse scheduling.
Cyclic flushing suppression via pre-night temperature drops, xylem calcium transport to prevent Blossom End Rot (BER), and shade screen thresholds.
Vertical farm DLI 14β17 mol/mΒ²/d optimization, downward vertical airflow (>0.5 m/s) boundary layer disruption, and nocturnal mass-flow tipburn defense.
Stem length vs. bud head size thermal balance, bent-shoot canopy architecture, supplemental LED red:far-red ratios, and powdery mildew VPD control.
Crassulacean Acid Metabolism (CAM) nocturnal COβ uptake (Phase I malate storage), 27Β°C vegetative vs. 19Β°C cooling spike induction, and bark moisture control.
High-temperature 22β26Β°C 24-hour mean scheduling, UV-A/blue photon anthocyanin peel pigmentation, and root-zone 21Β°C minimum heating requirements.
Phenylpropanoid and monoterpene (linalool/eugenol) UV-blue spectral elicitation, chilling injury prevention (>13Β°C), and Peronospora belbahrii humidity cutoff.
High-PPFD (900β1,400 Β΅mol/mΒ²/s) COβ enrichment (1,200 ppm) saturation curves, vegetative vs. late-flower VPD progression (0.8 β 1.45 kPa), and osmotic EC dry-back.
In modern Dutch and German high-tech horticulture (Gartenbau-Meister / Plant Empowerment), climate and irrigation computers do not merely maintain static temperature or humidity setpoints. Instead, growers steer the physiological balance between vegetative leaf/stem capacity (Source) and generative flower/fruit sink strength (Sink) across three coupled physical balances: the Energy Balance, the Water Balance, and the Assimilate (COβ) Balance.
Plant photosynthesis is driven photochemically by Photosynthetically Active Radiation ($PAR$, 400β700 nm), which has a low temperature sensitivity ($Q_{10} \approx 1.1\text{β}1.3$ at elevated $\text{CO}_2$). Conversely, dark respiration, phloem loading, meristem cell division, and truss development rate follow enzymatic Arrhenius kinetics ($Q_{10} \approx 2.0$). Consequently, the 24-hour average greenhouse temperature ($T_{24h}$) must scale linearly with the Daily Light Integral ($DLI$, $\text{mol}\cdot\text{m}^{-2}\cdot\text{d}^{-1}$):
T_24h_target (Β°C) = T_base_crop + k_RTR Γ (DLI_actual / 10 molΒ·mβ»Β²Β·dβ»ΒΉ)
If $T_{24h}$ exceeds the assimilate supply supported by the day's $DLI$, the crop depletes non-structural carbohydrates via night respiration, producing thin stems, weak flower trusses, and blossom abortion. Conversely, if $T_{24h}$ is too low relative to $DLI$, sink translocation stalls and starch accumulates in chloroplasts, triggering feedback inhibition of Rubisco and purple leaf anthocyanin stress.
