Biophysical Soil Physics: Air Porosity, Water Retention Curves & Root Zone Aeration

1. The Geometry of Containerized Root Media

Unlike open-field soil where gravitational water drains indefinitely downward to deep aquifers, containerized potted substrates are governed by a perched water table (PWT) at the bottom of the pot. The zero-matric-potential boundary at the drainage holes forces the bottom layer of substrate to remain 100% water-saturated immediately following irrigation, irrespective of substrate quality.

2. Key Physical Parameters: TP, CC, and AFP

Total Porosity (TP, %) = (Pore Volume / Total Container Volume) × 100
Container Capacity (CC, %) = (Volumetric Water Retained after Free Drainage / Total Volume) × 100
Air-Filled Porosity (AFP, %) = TP − CC [Optimal: 15% - 25%]

When AFP drops below 10%, oxygen diffusion rate (ODR) through the root zone falls below critical thresholds (\(ODR < 20 \times 10^{-8} \text{ g cm}^{-2} \text{ min}^{-1}\)), initiating rapid root cortex anoxia, anaerobic fermentation (ethanol toxicity), and opportunistic Pythium damping-off infection.
